Vitamin B 12 is an essential water soluble vitamin, that plays a key role in the functioning of the body?

The major roles are listed below;

  • Neurological, nerve health and cognitive function

  • Red blood cell formation 

  • Energy production

  • DNA synthesis

 

Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver, therefore it can take a few years for the deficiency to develop, B12 injections can replenish the stores. 

 

Vitamin B12 is usually found in animal based food products there is an increase amount of the population; that are vegan (plant based) or vegetarian.

Who requires Vitamin B12?

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency (detected in a blood test)

  • Vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian (eats fish)

  • Women who take oral contraceptive pill

  • People who take protein pump inhibitors (PPI) taken for heartburn

  • Past medical history of  gastric surgery 

  • Anaemia as this may alter the effect of Vitamin B12 absorption 

  • People who would to boost their energy

 

 

Vitamin B12 Injections

Are given as a intermuscular injection often in the muscle, at the top of the arm

The frequency is determined according to the clients medical history, if they are Vitamin B12 deficient? They will need a loading dose;  of 6 injections over a 2-3 weeks period. Often they would need a booster at 10-12 weeks intervals.

 

Prior to having the injection a full consultation is provided to ensure you are suitable to have the injection. It is advisable to discuss with your GP first.
