HAY FEVER CLINIC/TREATMENTS

What is Hay-fever?

Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life. You'll experience hay fever symptoms if you have an allergic reaction to pollen. Pollen is a fine powder released by plants as part of their reproductive cycle. https://www.nhsinform.scot/self-help-guide-hay-fever 2023

Hay fever is caused by your immune system over reacting to the pollen. Your immune system will try to fight off the pollen, by using up your energy. The main systems of hay fever are; red, itchy and watering eyes, itchy and runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, headaches, fatigue or tiredness, sore throat, a cough, feeling irritable and poor sleep which can affect, your everyday living.

Acupuncture for Hay fever

Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms. This promotes physical and emotional wellbeing. Those suffering from allergies, acupuncture can help to relieve hay fever symptoms:

  • Alleviate nasal congestion and reduce sneezing

  • Reduce  allergy-related headaches

  • Reduce  eye irritation and itchiness

  • Boost the immune system, reducing the overall allergic response

Acupuncture treatment can provide  long term benefits of hay fever relief, without the side effects or resistance to medication that occurs with long term use of substances such as corticosteroids. From Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, acupuncture points restore the flow of energy or Qi to the nerves and sinuses of the head and face.

After the acupuncture treatment, the part of your brain that has become hypersensitive to pollen and activates the hay fever histamine response is calmer. The immune response to pollen and allergies, becomes balanced and in harmony. TCM believes that health is the free flow of Qi or energy around the body. When the energy flows,  freely, you are healthy and energetic. When Qi is not flowing freely, due to stagnation, congestion and inflammation, it can develop into diseases, tiredness and fatigue.

Several sessions of acupuncture treatment is often required to treat  hay fever during the allergy season, to provide symptom relief. However many clients, experience, significant hay-fever improvements after their first acupuncture treatment.  Whilst some clients , experience longer-term benefits, beyond the allergy season.
